Optical design - Bertin Technologies

Optical design

Bertin Winlight uses the Zemax® software, which enables it to design complex and optimized optical systems.

Whether you already have a design or simply need to express your requirements, Bertin Winlight’s optical engineers are here to support you. With their expertise in optical calculation (using Zemax®), they are capable of designing complex optical combinations that integrate lenses, mirrors, and other components with unique technical specifications. Our team of experienced optical engineers can optimize our solutions to provide feasible systems at controlled costs.

Bertin Winlight also conducts photometric calculations and analyzes existing designs (optimization, tolerancing). Our optical design department relies on the experience and know-how of qualified optical engineers, some of whom have over 30 years of experience in the field.

From UV to infrared band 3

We study, design, and manufacture optical systems tailored to a wide range of applications, from ultraviolet to infrared (up to 15 μm), using appropriate materials and treatments. During the design phase, we consider the availability of optical materials, their manufacturability, and their compatibility with specified environments, allowing us to ensure the project’s viability while optimizing costs and minimizing risks.

Environmental conditions

The systems studied are generally designed to go beyond the laboratory setting and must withstand at least the transport conditions that can be critical for the preservation of optical alignment and the optical components themselves. From the design phase, optical engineers ensure the optomechanical stability of their design and, if necessary, explore options for athermalization. To do this, they collaborate with mechanical and/or electronic engineers from the outset of the project to identify the most suitable solutions.

Some systems are specifically designed to operate in cryogenic environments or under demanding conditions such as military applications or very high temperatures.

Alignment strategy

Optical engineers do not just develop a theoretical design: they also define the alignment strategy for the final system based on available resources to minimize integration costs. For complex cases, they establish the necessary adjustment procedures and suggest the appropriate alignment and adjustment tools.

Study of complex systems

Bertin Winlight studies complex systems for various clients in the optics field, both in France and abroad. These include:

  • Specific UV, Visible, and IR objectives
  • Mirror or lens collimators
  • Afocal systems with mirrors or lenses
  • Complete instruments
  • Complex fish-eye lenses
  • Alignment benches, testing benches, optical axis harmonization benches for aiming
  • Reference tools for optical aiming axes
  • Optronic systems and benches

In 99% of cases, the responsibility for manufacturing these complex systems is entrusted to Bertin Winlight, which has conducted the preliminary studies.
