The Laue-Langevin Institute (ILL) is an international research center for neutron science in Grenoble, France. It operates a high-flux 58 MW nuclear reactor producing fission in a compact-core fuel element. Every year, 1.400 scientists visit the ILL and 800 experiments are performed.
The ILL Grenoble has to respect the same safety rules as the other nuclear operators in France (EDF, AREVA or CEA), and monitor radiations in the environment for its routine operations, but also in case of an emergency situation (including nuclear accidents).
In order to get radiological measurements, the ILL combines Bertin Instruments’ MiniTRACE Radio Gamma survey meters with drones. In case of an incident, this system ensures the identification of the contaminated areas, even during a communication shutdown.
Paired with a drone, the robust and accurate MiniTRACE Gamma S10R is a reliable solution for emergency radiation monitoring around nuclear facilities. With the ShortLINK radio receiver (proprietary communication channel), it offers an optimal solution to monitor the situation and inform public authorities, even in case of public networks shutdown or saturation. For higher requirements on transmission distance, the SkyLINK receiver can achieve coverage up to a 100 km (depending on landscape).
